Selecting Footwear Hardware: Eyelets, Lace Tips and Decorative Details

Key questions for footwear buyers choosing eyelets, shoelace tips, buckles and decorative metal details for custom shoe projects.

Footwear hardware is small, but it is highly visible and must work with the shoe construction. Start with the material stack and the available application area. Eyelets need to suit the upper thickness, opening shape and lace size. Lace tips need to fit the lace or cord without splitting, slipping or creating an uncomfortable edge. Decorative buckles and studs need to be assessed with the final position and the expected movement of the shoe.

Share the shoe sample, upper material, lace dimensions and a drawing of the hardware position. This gives the supplier the information needed to review opening sizes, back construction, attachment method and finish direction. Do not rely on an image alone when a component must fit a particular lace or material thickness.

Finish should support the overall footwear design and intended use. Agree the surface appearance on an approved sample, especially where a finish will sit beside other metal components. For children’s products, performance footwear or projects with special market requirements, state the applicable requirement during the RFQ and before sampling.

The final sample should be checked in the actual footwear assembly. Review fit, edge condition, visible finish and ease of use before approving production. This is the most reliable way to make sure the selected hardware works as well as it looks.
